IQ-275 Intelligent Lighting Controller Installation Information
Wiring diagrams and instructions for several unique situations are available by clicking one of the buttons below.
IMPORTANT: This product is designed for use on incandescent and most LED lamps. Use with HID lamps may damage the lamps and/or controller and will void your warranty.
As shown in fig. 1, above, connect the negative lead on each lamp to ground. Connect the positive lead on each lamp to the striped violet/white and orange/white wires on the controller using an included Posi-lock® connector. The striped wires may be connected together if only one lamp is used or to a single wire connected to all the attached lamps. The controller has two identical channels, each of which can power a 144 watt/12 amp load. The two channels can be connected in parallel to power a combined load of 288 watts/24 amps. This is the recommended configuration if unequal loads are to be driven, as it will balance the loads over both channels.
Connect the solid violet and orange wires through an appropriate fuse with a Posi-lock® connector, then to a switched or unstitched 12 volt source.
Note that the IQ-275 serves as a relay, so no separate relay is required.
Connect the red, white, and black wires from the controller to your vehicle's switched power, high beam and ground wires respectively using the included Posi-tap® connectors. Switched power to the red wire can be any power source that comes on with the ignition, such as a parking light or taillight. It only needs to supply 0.015 amps to power the controller.
Installation Options for Additional Brightness Levels
Lamps will be at 100% when the high beam is on. When the high beam is off the controller can provide up to three different brightness levels. If you leave the yellow wire disconnected, the controller will operate the lamps at one brightness level when the high beam is off. The default with the yellow wire disconnected is 20%, but it can be programmed to operate the lamps at any brightness level from off to 100% in 10% increments. If additional levels are required a switch can be installed and connected to the yellow wire as shown in the three diagrams below. Each level can be programmed, details are below.
Optional Two Position Switch
2 independent brightness settings A & B
Optional Momentary-Contact Pushbutton Switch
A double-tap on the button will toggle between brightness levels A & B.
Note: BMW turn signal cancel button on right handlebar may be used for this purpose.
Optional Three Position Switch
3 independent brightness settings A, B, & C
Any 3-position switch as shown in figure 4 may be used to switch brightness levels. One example is the Trail Tech handlebar switch. Wiring for this switch is illustrated below.
Configure Operating Mode (Driving Light or Fog Light)
The IQ-275 comes from the factory configured to control driving lights, which come on at full brightness when the high beam comes on. It can also be configured to control fog lights, which go off when the high beam comes on. Many jurisdictions have regulations that require auxiliary lamps to operate this way.
This configuration may be changed during installation to suit the type of lamps being used, as follows:
Ensure that the high beam switch is ON, and the yellow wire is left disconnected: i.e. not connected to ground or +12 volts.
Turn on the ignition and before 5 seconds elapse briefly connect the yellow wire to ground 2 times. This will toggle the mode between Driving Light mode and Fog Light mode. If a switch is connected to the yellow wire as shown in figures 3, 4 or 5 above, this switch may be used to briefly connect the yellow wire to ground.
When the high beam is off, the IQ-275 can provide three different brightness settings, controlled by the yellow wire. Connecting this wire to ground, leaving it disconnected, or connecting it to +12 volts selects a different brightness setting, as shown in the table below.
If a two-position toggle switch is connected to the yellow wire as shown in Figure 3, setting A or B may be selected. If a three-position, center-off toggle switch is used as shown in Figure 4, setting A, B or C may be selected. If a momentary-contact normally-open pushbutton switch is connected as shown in figure 5, then a double-tap on this switch will toggle between settings A and B. If no switch is used, the bare end of the yellow wire should be insulated with tape or the included Posi-lock connector. The lamps will then illuminate at setting B.
Programming Different Brightness Levels
Programming different brightness levels into the IQ-275 is very easy. Skene Design has developed an innovative method that uses only the vehicle's high beam switch. The brightness of each setting may be changed from the default value in order to suit your own requirements. This is done as follows:
1) Ensure that the high beam is off, then turn on the ignition. Wait 3-5 seconds for the lamps to flash twice.
The lamps connected to the controller will come on at low power for three seconds. This is done to minimize power drain on the vehicle’s battery before the engine starts. The lamps will then flash briefly two times and go to the brightness level determined by the connection of the yellow wire.
2) As soon as you see the two flashes from the lamps, immediately flash the high beam three times before three seconds have elapsed. The controller will respond by flashing the lamps back, signaling that the unit is now in programming mode.
3) Once in programming mode, each time the high beam is switched on then off, the brightness for the current setting will increase by 10%, up to 100%. The next increment beyond 100% will cycle it back to 0% (off).
4) When the desired brightness for this switch setting has been reached, move the switch to the next position (or hold down the pushbutton switch if that is being used) and program this setting in the same manner.
5) Exit programming mode by turning the ignition off. Programming mode will also end if no activity is seen on the high beam switch for 20 seconds. The new brightness level for each setting(s) is saved in non-volatile memory and will be remembered the next time the ignition is turned on.
When converting an off-road bike for road use any 3-position, center-off switch can be used as a headlight switch programmed to OFF, LOW and HIGH brightness settings. In such a configuration the white wire would only be used only during the initial programming of the controller to set the desired brightness levels. Programming is done by touching the white wire to +12 volts, in place of turning the high beam switch on and off. The white wire is then insulated and tucked out of the way.
Options for Wiring the ALERT feature on the IQ-275-A
If you are wiring the IQ-275-A, the connections in the wiring diagram enable you to just tap your high beam switch twice within one second to initiate the brief, but highly conspicuous flashing sequence. There are some options for activating the Alert sequence that require different wiring. These are described below.
Note that the button on this switch, as well as the high beam, may be used to program the IQ-275 and activate
the ALERT! feature on the IQ-275-A.
The wiring for this is illustrated at left.
The diodes are 1N4001 or equivalent, (1 amp, >50 volts).
The horn can be used as an ALERT trigger.
This is done by connecting the hot lead on the horn to the IQ-275-A's white wire as shown at left.
The diodes are 1N4001 or equivalent, (1 amp, >50 volts).

The wiring and instructions for optional switches as well as the programming involve only the yellow and white wires from the controller and are the same as above.

IQ-175 Installation Instructions - discontinued in January 2016
(The IQ-275, which replaced the IQ-175 in January 2016, is easier to install and supports higher-power lamps)
If the lamps are LEDs, ensure that the negative lead is connected to the blue wire, and the positive lead is connected through a fuse either to the battery or to a switched source of power. No separate relay is required as the IQ-175 performs this function.
Ensure that the lamp’s negative lead is not internally connected to the lamp housing. If this is the case, it will be necessary to electrically isolate the lamp housing from the vehicle chassis.
